Artistic Statement

I search to find those pieces of wood that have a hidden gem inside, I work diligently to create a piece featuring the artistic beauty while showing respect for the heritage of the medium. I then present the abstract/detailed form that captures the essence of the personalities within the varieties of wood. We also have a personal quest to artistically reassign discarded, unappreciated wood and display its unrecognized hidden qualities. The wood me, and in that sense, it is prescriptive in finding the most natural line, curve, angle and texture, while still representing the structure & subject.

The artist also appreciates the “living” aspect of the wood. That is, how the environment and the genetics/species affect the outcome of the final product, emphasizing the color, grain, workability, and personal environmental impact on the growth presentation of an individual specimen.

I favor working with the redwoods which grew for thousands of years and were cut down and the stumps burned. This is a waste of precious eco-history & the plays a big role in the progressive disappearance of the forests. The artist works to manifest some of its beuty in an artistic composition highlighting these charcoaled stumps and chunks into a recognizable design with-in the sculptures.

My preferred historical venue is that of the commissioned project. In this way, I can work with the client in capturing the artistic nature of the piece, and in the process find a commonality in the beauty and uniqueness of each work. I strive to appreciate each piece for its full character.

My Bio

Sean Cudney is from the small town of Wellsville, Utah and has chosen sculpture as his life’s passion. Sean has been specializing his craft for over 20 years, this combined experience has allowed much growth in not only his artistic & personal endeavors, but also by allowed him to share in the value of a legacy.

He was first introduced to gunstock engraving at the age of 16 after a car accident immobilized him for some time. Sean found engraving to be astonishingly enjoyable and this type of labor didn’t stress his back injuries. However, he was soon dissatisfied with the single dimension limitations & started 3D sculpting; using wood as his main medium. He has since evolved in this area and is now fluent in many mediums such as, wood, metal work, clay & bronze sculpture.

While studying at Utah State University, he learned a mastery of form as exhibited by a very large redwood “Chief Sitting Bull” sculpture in Woodside, CA and a 7ft. Female interior pillar in Bear Lake, Utah, and a huge mountain lion mount at the Taxidermy Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He works almost exclusively from private commissions, liking the personal collaboration with his clients including a large Buddha at Still Heart Retreat in San Francisco, CA., a variety of subjects and Native American figures. He recently completed a 40 inch fish of rare fiddle-back redwood, He continues his enthusiastic search of positive space and form and enjoying the creative process
